What Is a Fixture?

A fixture is a specially engineered production device that holds, clamps and — where needed — supports a workpiece in the correct position during a CNC machining, welding, assembly or inspection operation. The purpose of a fixture is to guarantee that the part stays in exactly the same position relative to the machine or welding station, no matter how many times the operation is repeated.

While a standard vise or clamp is designed for general-purpose use, a fixture is engineered specifically for one part. That's why every fixture is custom-engineered around the geometry of the part being worked on, the specifications of the machine, and the tolerance to be achieved.

The Difference Between a Fixture and a Jig

The Core Components of a Fixture

1. Locators

Fixed pins, V-block seats, or conical locators that establish the part's reference points relative to the machine. Typically made from hardened steel, they ensure the part contacts the fixture at exactly the same point every time.

2. Clamps

Mechanisms that hold the part firmly against the cutting forces generated during the operation. They range widely, from manual screw clamps to hydraulic and pneumatic clamping cylinders.

3. Body / Base Plate

The main structure that all locating and clamping elements are mounted on, and which attaches to the machine table. Designing it rigid enough to resist deflection under machining forces is critical for precision.

4. Supports

Additional support points used especially with thin-walled or long parts, to prevent vibration and deformation.
